听John Ian Wing这个名字，一时还难以分辨他到底属于哪个国家，但这位在墨尔本的温莎出生的中国人却是一位和奥林匹克运动紧密相关的人。出生几天后，他的母亲便逝世，他的父亲将他寄养在墨尔本的“儿童之家”，几年后再婚才给他接回。1969年，他在英国度假并在那里找到了一份工作，如今的他已经退休并居住在伦敦。他的中文名字叫雷天得。
就在1956年墨尔本奥运会闭幕式前前，奥委会接到一封匿名信，信件鼓励奥林匹克应该做一些他们从未做过的事情，建议他们应该将所有运动员集合在一起，作为全球团结的一个标志。“那时战争，政治和国籍全部都不重要了，我们成为了一个大家庭，人类还需要什么呢。”雷天得写道。闭幕式上，运动员也不用排队，而是自由的进场和公众挥手。离那年的闭幕式只有一天，这个建议被直接通过。
那时的雷天得正在澳洲学习，“我当时就住在墨尔本，我们都很兴奋奥运会在家乡举行。当年的奥运会遭遇到很多抵制，一些政府建议自己的选手与其他国家的选手在奥运村内保持距离，所以我当时就想到给(墨尔本)奥组委写这封信。”他解释自己的初衷，“当时国际奥委会和(墨尔本)奥组委都急于找到一个解决问题的办法。我的信刚好给他们提供了一个解决方案，我周四写的信，周六就是闭幕式了，几乎没有时间讨论(就通过)了。”他的主意被奥林匹克委员会同意，这个习惯也一直延续至今。


三十年后，一位名叫John Ian Wing的中国人声称他就是当年那位匿名信的“作者”，也因此，他成为奥林匹克运动的一个英雄，他的历史性贡献也被奥林匹克运动赠与了一枚奖章，他也是第一位获此奖章的中国人。写信的时候，雷天得还只有17岁，是个实习木匠，他选择匿名是因为他不想让家人知道他写了这封信给“重要人物”，因为这可能被认为是不成熟或者鲁莽的。为了满足媒体的渴求，他写了第二封信，解释了自己匿名的原因。更重要的是，他的主意最终成了奥林匹克的一个传统，特别符合当年墨尔本“友好比赛”的主旨。2000年时，悉尼奥运村的一条街道也为了表示对他的感激被命名为“John Ian Wing Parade”。
